What are we learning in Music Class?
During the 4th nine weeks, all grade levels will focus on EXPRESSION AND FORM. Expression refers to all the elements of music that make a performance unique (dynamics, phrasing, tempo, articulation, etc.) Form refers to the way music is organized. (call/response, ABA, verse/chorus, etc.)

Kindergarten
During the 4th nine weeks, Kindergarten Music Class will focus on refining skills in singing and playing all classroom instruments. We will also focus on learning some basic "musical words" such as forte/piano and tempo.
First Grade
First Graders will continue to build their singing and playing skills. They will also focus on being able to identify and describe the form of a song. We will do songs in several different forms such as call and response, echo songs, and ABA songs. First graders will also get to listen to and discuss some instrumental music this nine weeks.
Second Grade
Second Graders will add to concepts learned in previous years. They will also continue to refine their singing and playing skills as well as note reading. This nine weeks will have a focus on describing the form of songs as well as learning some musical terminology. Second graders will also listen to some instrumental music and describe the mood and tone of songs.

Third Grade
In addition to reviewing concepts learned in previous years, third graders will increase their repertoire of songs. They will continue to refine their singing and playing skills. This nine weeks will begin with a unit on ballads (songs that tell a story). The last part of this nine weeks will be an intro to reading notation on the treble clef. This will prepare students for 4th grade music and playing recorder.
Fourth Grade
In addition to building upon knowledge and skills gained in previous grades, Fourth Graders will continue to practice reading both pitch and rhythm notation. They will begin to learn more complex melodies to both sing and play on their recorders. They will learn all remaining recorder notes by the end of the year.
Fifth Grade
In addition to building upon knowledge and skills gained in previous grades, Fifth Graders will be learning more complicated melodies on their recorders. They will continue to refine their note/rhythm reading and recorder skills. They will begin playing recorder songs with 2 and 3-part harmony. Students will also refine their singing skills as they practice to perform at 5th grade graduation in June.

How can you help?
-
Encourage your child to talk to you about what they learned in Music Class.
-
If your child is a 4th or 5th Grader, encourage them to practice their Recorder. Even 5 minutes a day makes a big difference!
-
Talk to your child about your favorite kinds of music, the songs you hear on the radio, or even songs you hear while shopping in a store.
-
Clap/snap/pat the beat to any and all songs you hear with your child. Learning to keep a steady is super important in building musicianship.
